There is no single perfect application for every kind of “retro” image. The strongest choices depend on what you actually mean:

- Best serious experimental film simulation: Spektrafilm

A blunt warning: many new GitHub projects describe themselves as “professional-grade” despite having only a handful of commits, almost no users and no stable releases. They may be interesting, but they are prototypes until proven otherwise. I have marked those accordingly.

GIMP provides layers, masks, curves, channel operations, blend modes and manual color separation. G'MIC adds hundreds of filters, including film emulations, grain, degradation, color effects, frames, light effects and artistic processing.
This is the best general recommendation because it is not locked to presets. You can combine film emulation, scratches, grain, halation-like glow, faded curves, chromatic shifts and manual channel work in a nondestructive layered composition.

2. darktable + t3mujinpack

darktable is the strongest free Lightroom-style option for this job. It supports scene-referred editing, tone mapping, color grading and 3D LUT files such as .cube, .3dl, HaldCLUT PNG and .gmz.
The t3mujinpack adds presets inspired by well-known analog stocks, including Kodachrome, Velvia and classic black-and-white films.

ART keeps much of RawTherapee’s processing power while aiming for a simpler interface. It also supports advanced color workflows, including ACES CLF LUTs through OpenColorIO.

Verdict: probably the best option for someone who likes RawTherapee’s output but dislikes its interface.
5. ComfyUI-Darkroom
- Type: Node-based color grading and film-emulation suite for ComfyUI

- Cost/license: Free and open source
- Best for: Extremely deep and automatable film workflows
- Technicolor: Potentially strong through custom grading and LUT pipelines
- Difficulty: High
- Status: New and experimental, but unusually ambitious
The project currently advertises dozens of color nodes, a large collection of film stocks, spectral negative/print combinations, lens profiles, color matching, scopes, CMYK print tools, RAW-oriented processing and Sabattier/solarization effects.
Brutal assessment: this is one of the most technically interesting discoveries in the research, but it is too new to call mature. Use it if you enjoy node graphs, Python environments and experimental workflows.
6. Spektrafilm
- Type: Spectral analog-photography simulation
- Platforms: Python environment
- Cost/license: Open source
- Best for: Physically motivated negative → print → scan experiments
- Technicolor: Not purpose-built for Technicolor, but technically relevant
- Difficulty: Very high
- Status: Active research/experimental project
Instead of merely placing a color preset over an image, Spektrafilm models a pipeline involving a virtual negative, enlarger, print and scan. It exposes film-stock data, couplers, grain, halation and other characteristics.
Verdict: the most intellectually serious project in this list. It is not the easiest or fastest, but it is much closer to actual film-process simulation than generic “vintage” filters.
7. AlcedoStudio
- Type: Open-source RAW editor and color-grading application
- Platforms: Check current releases
- Cost/license: Open source
- Best for: Modern GPU-oriented film grading
- Technicolor: Possible through custom LUTs and grading
- Difficulty: Medium to high
- Status: New and experimental
AlcedoStudio advertises ACES-oriented color grading, spectral film LUTs, GPU/CPU grain, halation, HSL controls, lift/gamma/gain wheels and scopes.
Caveat: impressive feature list, but still a young project. Do not replace a stable production workflow with it before testing exports, color management and large files.
8. Filmulator

- Best for: Natural film-like tonality without drowning in controls

Filmulator simulates aspects of film development rather than offering a giant preset store. It is particularly good for smooth local contrast, natural highlight handling and an analog-feeling tonal response.

Why: protects RAW quality while keeping the decorative work separate.
Setup 3 — Best quick Technicolor 2-strip workflow

trzyglow/2stripLUT. - Adjust exposure and white balance before the LUT.
- Reduce the LUT strength if skin becomes unnaturally orange.
- Add fine grain after the color transform.
Why: much faster and more consistent than manually rebuilding the color matrix every time.
